November 12, 2012 (ATLANTA) – Senator Johnny Isakson visited Bobby Dodd Institute (BDI) on Veterans Day, November 12, 2012. Isakson toured BDI's AT&T Call Center, which has employed 32 veterans and veterans with disabilities since opening in August.
BDI has partnered with Atlanta-based NexxLinx Corporation to operate a call center on behalf of AT&T at BDI's headquarters on Marietta Blvd in Atlanta. Wayne McMillan, BDI president and CEO, said "We have been delighted to partner with AT&T and NexxLinx to create opportunities for veterans. The partnership reflects our shared commitment to helping veterans reenter the civilian workforce. We're honored that Senator Isakson is visiting us on Veterans Day to pay tribute to the men and women who have bravely served our country."
BDI recruits veterans and collaborates with NexxLinx and AT&T to provide job training and manage operations for the customer support call center. In addition to the customer support representatives, four members of the call center's management team are also veterans.
"On this special day, as we take time to remember and give thanks to the many men and women who have sacrificed of themselves for the good of their country, we are also called by a sense of duty to take care of those who have taken care of us," said William Hague, AT&T executive vice president for International Alliances and Integrations.
"This international call center is a very meaningful example of how we at AT&T demonstrate our own support and commitment to the recruitment and hiring of veterans each day. In turn, the tremendous skill, training, dedication to quality, and commitment to excellence these men and women possess immediately benefits our consumers. It truly is a win-win partnership, and I am so thankful to Sen. Isakson for recognizing these efforts, and for taking time out to join us here today."
Craig Mento, CEO Nexxlinx and Nexxphase also remarked that "Nexxlinx has been proud to collaborate with partners at Bobby Dodd Institute and AT&T. Together, we are creating opportunities for veterans to succeed in the workforce and in their communities after years of dedicated service and sacrifice for our country."
BDI operates additional call centers and switchboards for partners including the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Atlanta and DeKalb Medical. These operations, like BDI's other social enterprises, create and sustain good jobs for people with disabilities and disadvantages who face barriers to employment. People with disabilities face an unemployment rate of 70%.
Bobby Dodd Institute is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower people with disabilities and disadvantages to maximize their potential by securing economic self-sufficiency, independence and integration into society. BDI serves over 800 people each year with job training and other vocational support services. BDI employs more than 200 people with disabilities in social enterprises ranging from call centers and administrative services to janitorial and grounds maintenance services. BDI offers job training programs at its facilities in Atlanta and Jonesboro, Georgia, and operates social enterprises throughout Georgia and in Alabama and Tennessee.
